PROJECT:

Port Authority Gateway Station

DETAILS

Client Name: Port Authority of Allegheny County
Delivery System(s): General Contractor
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Completion Date: 2011
Cost: $50.2 million

OVERVIEW

The Gateway Station project was one of many involved in the completion of the North Shore Connector, which extends the Pittsburgh T subway system from downtown to the North Shore. The project included construction of a cut and cover tunnel, as well as the station shell for the new Gateway Station. The heavy construction work involved removal, relocation, support and replacement of utilities; shoring of the excavated cut and cover tunnel and station; monitoring of the buildings adjacent to the alignment; controlled fill; maintenance and protection of traffic; and replacement of sidewalks and streets.

This project also included the partial demolition of the existing subway station. It allowed, however, for removal, preservation and restoration of the Bearden Mural that had been on the existing tunnel wall.
